OUR SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP WITH

Lucy Shuker Paralympian wheelchair tennis player

Kate met Lucy in 2003. Kate had set up and sponsored a wheelchair tennis tournament at the Blackbrook Tennis Centre in Taunton for a number of years. Lucy had only been out of the spinal unit in Sailsbury for 10 months when she drove down to Taunton to take part in her first ever tennis tournament. She was drawn against national & international players and it was clear to see from that very moment she was a natural with a tennis racket. This shouldn’t have come as a surprise given the fact she played badminton at national level before her accident on her motorbike.
Lucy felt very much at home at the tennis centre in Taunton and relocated from Fleet in Hampshire, staying with Kate and winning a place on The British Tennis Foundation development programme to develop her game. With a local coach and the support of the tennis centre Lucy ’s tennis went from strenght to strength and she has been world ranked within the top 10 for singles and doubles in the womens game for nearly 20 years.
Kate has looked after her eyecare during this time providing Lucy with the latest technology in sports eyewear to help enhance her vision on court.

The Beswetherick Opticians is currently trialling Lucy with contact lenses to give her best corrected vision.
Lucy has represented Great Britain in 4 Paralympic games and Kate recalls being courtside at the London 2012 Olympics and watching Lucy win a medal to a home crowd as one of the most humbling experiences of her life. The sponsorship has been a pleasure but its the enduring friendship of which we are most proud.

OUR SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP WITH

Tennis player Natalie Ackland

Beswetherick Opticians is very proud to sponsor local tennis player and coach Natalie Ackland.
Nat is representing Great Britain in the ITF World Tennis Masters Tour World Championships. The tournament takes place in Turkey from the 9th-14th March.

This isn’t the first outing for Natalie representing Team GB, she also has a distinguished coaching career spanning over 25 years at Blackbrook Tennis Centre in Taunton. She coached Paralympian wheelchair tennis player Lucy Shuker during the early years of her career and Lucy credits Nat with being the pivotal person in transforming her love of tennis and successfully coaching her to her first Olympic medal in the London 2012 games.

2025 marked her 30th year of playing for Somerset Ladies and many years as their captain in the top division.
This summer they will be competing at Eastbourne in the open age group and the over 35’s age group of which they were champions last year.
Nat also competes in the National Premier League Doubles and National League Team Tennis for Taunton.
Kate at Beswethericks has enjoyed a long friendship with Nat and the practice is delighted to support a true homegrown talent and hardworking coach who has encouraged and developed so many local people into tennis over the years.
